Where is the Hanapepe Valley Lookout?
Located just 17 minutes from the popular Poipu Beach area, the Hanapepe Valley and canyon lookout is found at mile marker 14 on Highway 50.
What does the Hanapepe Valley Lookout oversee?
From the lookout, you’ll see a deep river valley, jutting mountains that cut across blue skies, and lush sugarcane fields. The colors of red clay and green vegetation make this view one of the most popular spots to snap photos on Kauai.
While the viewing area at the lookout isn’t huge, there’s still plenty of room to walk around and capture different angles of the valley when you visit.
History of the Hanapepe Valley Lookout
With a river carving its way across the valley floor, it’s no wonder that this fertile land was once a hub of the sugarcane industry. While the Garden Isle has shifted away from sugarcane production, the valley is still a large supplier of taro and coffee.
When is the best time to visit the Hanapepe Valley Lookout?
Most make a stop at the Hanapepe River Valley Lookout when on their way to Waimea Canyon. And while you’ll probably want to get an early start for that adventure, you should try to plan your arrival sometime between 8:00 AM and 11 AM.
The valley won’t have full sun until after 8, but by 11, clouds can start to roll in, making things harder to see in the afternoons and evenings.
What should I bring with me to visit the Hanapepe Valley Lookout?
As with anything outdoors on Kauai, bringing sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses will be helpful. If you’re continuing on to Waimea Canyon, bringing comfortable walking shoes will be important so you can take advantage of hiking trails. Wear light layers so you can add or take away as the weather changes. And most importantly, be sure to bring your camera!
What is there to do near the Hanapepe Valley Lookout?

After you take in the sights at Hanapepe Valley, head on to the namesake town of Hanapepe, where you can explore local art galleries, shops, restaurants, and more!
There’s even a famous swinging bridge and a nearby beach where you can go for a swim (so add a bathing suit or change of clothes to that packing list we just mentioned).
For a uniquely Hawaiian activity near the lookout, head to the Kauai Coffee Plantation for a tour and taste of delicious island-roasted goodness. From seed to cup, they’ll tell you everything about how they make their delicious brews.
