Favorite Snorkel Locations on Kauai

Poipu Beach Park – Kauai’s South Shore

Poipu Beach Park is one of Kauai’s safest beaches, boasting some of the clearest waters in Hawaii. From a sheltered, shallow beach suitable for tiny tots to the renowned body-surfing at Brennecke Beach on Poipu's east end, the beach offers a variety of water activities. Poipu Beach also features lifeguards, bathrooms, and picnic tables, making it a great place to post up for the day and enjoy the sun. December through April offer some of the best snorkeling conditions with the chance to spot endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals as well as distant humpback whales.

Lydgate Beach Park – Near Wailua on Kauai’s East Side Beach

Enclosed within a lava-rock wall, the protected waters of this man-made lagoon make Lydgate Beach Park one of the best places for snorkeling on Kauai. With a surprising number of fish, including a school of friendly, large, and incredibly colorful parrotfish, it's a place where you can discover incredible sea life as you float on the gentle waters. Beyond snorkeling, Lydgate is a great spot for fishing, camping, sailing, and even surfing.

Anini Beach – Kauai’s North Shore

During the summer months, Anini Beach is one of the best snorkeling beaches on Kauai. With the longest and widest coral reef in the Hawaiian Islands, this two-and-a-half-mile-long stretch of sand boasts beautiful views and fantastic conditions for spotting all kinds of vibrant fish, anemones, starfish, and more. There's no lifeguard here, so be sure to pay attention to the tide charts and remember to wear your reef-safe sunscreen.

Tunnels — Kauai’s North Shore, Beyond Hana’le’i

Tunnels is named for the vast labyrinth of pathways that intersect its wide fringing reef. This shallow reef is interspersed with narrow, sometimes cavernous canyons. The variation in undersea terrain makes for exciting explorations and an ideal home for a wide array of reef life. When it comes to good snorkeling, Tunnels certainly knows how to provide.

Ke’e – At the very end of the road on Kauai’s North Shore

Protected by a reef, Ke'e features calm waters that make it a great snorkeling spot. It's also the beginning of the scenic Na Pali Coast. Situated within the Ha'ena State Park, it tends to be a bit more crowded, and you'll need to make a reservation before visiting as parking is very limited. Once you arrive, however, you're greeted with stunning views of surrounding green mountains, golden sand, and bright, clear water. Enjoy a peaceful day of paddleboarding, snorkeling, or relaxing on the shore when you visit, and stick around for a picture-perfect sunset.

Lawai Beach - Snorkel Tours on the South Side

Lawai Beach is definitely worth the visit when you're vacationing on Kauai. With a coral reef that protects the water from becoming too choppy and a massive variety of fish, many snorkel tour groups will visit this spot. That said, during certain months or on particularly windy days, you may find less-than-ideal conditions, so just be mindful. Assuming conditions are good, you'll enter via the little bay between the beach and the reef. The farther out you go, the clearer the water will become and the more variety of fish you'll see. Some you can look out for include the Moorish Idol, colorful Tangs, Triggerfish (the state fish of Hawaii), Parrotfish, and Unicornfish, and that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Snorkeling Tips

Please remember these snorkeling tips to get the most out of your snorkel adventures on Kauai and ensure that this Hawaiian paradise remains as beautiful the next time you visit.

  1. Always snorkel in areas where there are other swimmers and snorkelers.
  2. Do not snorkel near surfers or body surfers.
  3. Do not snorkel if the water is unclear, rough, or choppy.
  4. Look up out of the water periodically to keep your bearing. This easy precaution will keep you from drifting off course without knowing it.
  5. The best snorkeling is in calm clear water. Try mornings.
  6. Do not feed the fish under any circumstances. It fouls the water and sickens the fish, making them susceptible to predators.
  7. A good way to attract fish is to bring a zip-lock bag! Put a leaf or any other colorful object in the bag, fill it with water, and allow it to float near you. You’d be surprised at the curious fish that will swim up to inspect your bag.
  8. Help protect Kauai’s reefs! All coral reefs are marvelous ecosystems that take thousands of years to develop and only seconds to destroy. Float over shallow reefs, but do not walk on them. Paddle to a sandy spot to stand.
  9. Admire sea turtles and monk seals only from a distance! Both the Pacific green sea turtle and the monk seal are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Harassing them in any way, including touching, is against the law. These laws are strictly enforced in Hawaii. If you are fortunate enough to see one of these rare creatures in the water, enjoy them from a respectful distance.
  10. REMEMBER ALWAYS CHECK LOCAL CONDITIONS FOR SAFETY BEFORE ENTERING THE OCEAN. HIGH SURF AND STORM SURGES CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS ANYWHERE THEY OCCUR. LISTEN TO WEATHER FORECASTS, TALK TO LOCAL PEOPLE, AND PLAN YOUR SNORKEL LOCATION ACCORDINGLY.
