Adding a Hawaiian Favorite to the Menu
Kalua something! If you have visited Hawaii before, chances are you have attended at least one luau. Along with traditional song and dance most luaus will include great feasts fresh from the imu, an underground pit oven. This cooking method consists of layers of burning Kiawe wood, hot lava rocks, your desired meat or veggies, covered with ti and banana leaves steamed and smoked overnight, leaving you with moist, smokey deliciousness. Of course, we don’t expect you to dig up your own imu; however, do not be deterred. You can still Kalua your Turkey or Pork in an oven or crock pot. You can find dozens of recipes with a quick online search or two.
Delicious Poke (everyone’s favorite pupu). Poke (pronounced poh-keh) is basically cubed raw fish seasoned with sea salt, often times marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil, and tossed with limu, seaweed. You will find many variations of Poke found in the seafood department of most grocery stores in Hawaii.
Chocolate Haupia Pie. Haupia (pronounced how-pee-uh) is a softer, jello-like dessert made with coconut milk. A chocolate haupia pie combines a delicious layer of Haupia with a rich chocolate pudding on a fresh-baked pie crust for an even more delectable dessert.
